STABILITY ANALYSIS OF A CAPACITIVE FGM MICRO-BEAM USING MODIFIED COUPLE STRESS THEORY

Based on the Modified Couple Stress Theory,a functionally graded micro-beam under electrostatic forces is studied.The FGM micro-beam is made of two materials and material properties vary continuously along the beam thickness according to a power-law.Dynamic and static pull-in voltages are obtained and it is shown that the static and dynamic pull-in voltages for some materials cannot be obtained using classic theories and components of couple stress must be taken into account.In addition,it is shown that the values of pull-in voltages depend on the variation through the thickness of the volume fractions of the two constituents.     

Stress-Strain Behavior of Shape Memory Polymers by 1WE Method: Application to Tecoflex®

Thermomechanical cycles including programming, cooling, unloading and heating to trigger the 1WE were examined for a shape memory polymer (SMP), Tecoflex® (TFX EG-72D). Cycles were performed at 60°C with 50% and 225% strains and the recovery time of 10 min. Strains evolving with time were estimated during the thermomechanical treatments for the total 44 cycles using 50% strains and the total 50 cycles using 225% strains. Recovery ratios for 50% strains and 225% were also estimated. It turns out that programming, cooling, unloading and heating to trigger the 1WE causes an increase of irreversible strain and is associated with a corresponding decrease of the intensity of the 1WE in particular during the first thermomechanical cycles. In parallel scanning electron microscopic study using secondary electron imaging shows a very slight wavy surface structure evolved during cycling.     

Approximate and efficient calculation of dominant Lyapunov exponents of high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems

This short communication presents an efficient method for calculating dominant Lyapunov exponents (LEs) of high-dimensional nonlinear dynamic systems based on their reduced-order models obtained from the linear model reduction theory. Mathematical derivation shows that the LEs of the reduced-order models correspond to the dominant LEs of the original systems. Two numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.     

Structure and cooperativity of the hydrogen bonds in sodium dihydrogen triacetate

Geometry and energetics of low energy conformers of sodium dihydrogen triacetate (SDHTA) and its anion are studied using density functional theory (DFT) at the Becke, Lee‐Yang‐Parr hybrid functional (BLYP) and Becke, three‐parameter, Lee‐Yang‐Parr hybrid functional (B3LYP) levels. For both cases, two structures of comparable energy are found, which have different symmetry with respect to the two hydrogen bonds (HBs). DFT‐based Born–Oppenheimer molecular dynamics simulations are performed for SDHTA, which show that both structures are visited at room temperature conditions. The trajectory analysis further reveals that the two HBs behave anticooperative, that is, on average elongation of one HB is accompanied by a compression of the other one. This is in accord with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experimental studies for a similar counter ion–dihydrogen triacetate complex. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Effects of initial crystal size of diamond powder on surface residual stress and morphology in polycrystalline diamond (PCD) layer

Morse Theory And Invariant Concepts of Convexity

In optimization, the literature on invariant definitions of convexity has largely centered on the notion of invexity. However, the connection with Morse theory and related geometric trends has not been recognized and results do not appear to be as impressive as those in topology. Our purpose is to improve the situation in optimization, and to clarify the relationship between these two trends. The main result is that the problem can be reduced to the case of functions of one variable.
